Budget Brews: Blue-Red Cantrip

Hello all and welcome to this weeks Budget Brews! Winning is nice, but it isn't our main goal here at Budget Brews, instead we just try and have some fun! We tackle a few different ways to build here at Budget Brews, we either look at trying to make the more competitive decks cheaper on the wallet, or we just come up with something new that's easy on the wallet!

I wanna take a look at Standard once again this week and see what we can do with a pile of “okay” cards. The deck this week is also all about drawing cards, which - well - isn't the whole point of MTG just to draw as many cards as we possibly can? The best part about drawing cards with this particular deck, is that the more cards we draw the more damage we can deal to our opponent.

This is almost like a standard Storm deck:

I'm going to guess that a few of you are already seeing the game plan with the deck.

It's the centre piece of the deck. Just like with Modern storm, the more cards you draw equal a bigger Grapeshot well, with this deck the more cards you draw, the more times you can untap this card to tap it again and ping your opponent.

Yeah, pinging your opponent 20 times would be hard for any deck, it proves difficult enough to play 20 spells in a turn in Modern and they have things like Pyretic Ritual to help keep mana in the pool.

This fire blazing Alchemist is backed up with

A 1/1 that can help cast spells then flips into a 3/4 with Prowess and gives a decent Goblin Electromancer impression by giving you a discount on your spells is right where the deck wants to be.

For further support you have

They both help keep your hand full and can further pinging your opponent.

All told this deck might be the cheapest deck to date it'll only be about $80CAN from WizardTower.com and if you're looking to goof around online it's 29TIX.

After a few games of testing I've come to realize one thing about the current standard format: Spell Queller sucks. In general control is going to be a rough match up for the deck since you need to squeak in every point of damage you can get in which makes me thinks Jori En, Ruin Diver should maybe be another burn spell or two?

All in all I think this is a pretty fun deck that may not be the strongest contender I've ever written about, but it's something you can have a bit of fun with and play around with at you local FNM.

On an entirely different note: Last FNM a local college kid, or the local “Commander Guy” who helped me put together the budget Commander deck came to FNM last week with a budget brew by yours truly! He came with the Death Cloud deck and came in 5th place. He absolutely loved running the deck and will probably buy the pieces to upgrade it to a non-budget brew.

Thanks for joining me while I untap the multiverse, and I look forward to brewing up something for next week!

Have an idea for something you'd like me to brew up? Give me a shout in the comments! You can also follow me on Twitter, @maibuddha, Reddit /u/maibuddha, or you can join my Facebook group!
