Welcome all to the Daily Dose of Strixhaven. Today it’s all about the Boros College Lorehold. With tons of previews of cards from this college there is a lot to talk about. We are starting to see the main focuses of each college and what deck archetypes might be coming for Strixhaven. One of those archetypes is exiling instants or sorceries from your own graveyard and casting them, so we will see a card that fits well into that theme. Of course I’ll also talk about the big Elder Dragon from Lorehold and what they bring to the table.
First up is a creature that will allow you to start recasting all your instant and sorceries from your graveyard. Here is Radiant Scrollwielder.
Radiant Scrollwielder
To start off you get a 2/4 Dwarf creature for four mana. Not the best stats but there could be some synergies with Dwarves possibly. Now the fun parts! All your instants and sorceries you control have lifelink. This means that all your damage spells will also gain you life, turning into almost Lightning Helix’s. Speaking of instants and sorcery spells, you can start to recast them thanks to its second ability. You will have to wait until your next upkeep before getting a trigger, but if Radiant Scrollwielder stays on the battlefield it will continue to gain you value if you have some spells in your graveyard. The best spells to have in your graveyard would be damage spells so that you can gain some life with them. In general, sweeper damage spells will gain you a ton of life with a few creatures on the battlefield.
Next up is a creature that will also help you cast instants and sorceries from your graveyard. Here is Efreet Flamepainter.
Efreet Flamepainter
To start off you get a 1/4 double strike creature for four mana. If you can pump its power in any way you can really get in for some good damage if unblocked. If you can get through for damage though, you will start to see the true value of this card. Like Radiant Scrollwielder it allows you to cast some instants or sorcery cards from your graveyard and exile them afterward. The difference though is that you don’t have to pay the mana to cast it. This means that if you have some expensive spells in your graveyard you can cast them for free. Also with Efreet Flamepainter you get to target the spell you want instead of it being at random. The difficult part will be getting in for some damage, but hopefully, you can follow this creature up with some removal to keep the path clear.
Finally, we have what you’ve all been waiting for, the Elder Dragon for Lorehold. Here is Velomachus Lorehold.
Velomachus Lorehold
This Elder Dragon costs 7-mana to cast but what a set of stats and abilities you get. My first impression of this card is that I want to find a way to cheat it onto the battlefield through reanimation or other means since getting this out as early as possible will cause headaches for your opponent. To start off you get a 5/5 flying, vigilance and haste creature. This allows you to have evasion, attack the turn you cast it and be able to defend as a blocker as well. It provides a quick clock and will finish off your opponent in no time. Now for the super-duper fun ability. You get to look at your top 7 cards and cast an instant or sorcery spell of mana value 5 or less for free. Let’s have a look at the best targets in Standard right now.
Lorehold Command – The new Boros Command from Strixhaven is the perfect target for this ability. So many choices, so much value.
Doomskar – If you really need to sweep the battlefield, this might be a good choice to cast.
Experimental Overload – Create a nice creature and get back a sweet spell from your graveyard at the same time.
Mythos of Vadrok – Pick off some creatures and planeswalkers with this damage spell.
There you have it folks, 3 strong cards for Boros and the Lorehold college to make an instant/sorcery spells in the graveyard deck. I look forward to deckbuilding with these. Thanks again for reading the Daily Dose of Strixhaven. Join me again tomorrow to see what College we look at next!
