Hello and welcome to another article from CommandBeacon.com. Today we'll be going over a couple of deck lists for the multi-coloured Gods in Theros: Beyond Death. Like the other Gods of Theros they are both indestructible enchantment creatures that are not creatures unless you control enough devotion. The multi-coloured Gods require a bit more devotion if you are looking to use them for combat purposes but also come down with two devotion to start. Essentially, this totals five additional devotion rather than the four for the mono-coloured Gods. While it took them a whole block of three sets last time to give us fifteen Gods it's not surprising that they only have us the seven for this one set, one of which was the buy-a-box promo. Nonetheless they are strong cards who make great Commanders so let's take a look.
Klothys, God of Destiny
First off is Klothys, God of Destiny the God taking up the Gruul coloured God slot left behind by Xenagos, God of Revels. Klothys is a punishing God of graveyard hate and burn against your enemies but for you it’s ramp or life gain. As you start to build a board and curve into playing the larger threats within the deck you can just out value your opponents with ramp or completely cripple them with a wide piece of land destruction and slowly shock them to death with Klothys.
This deck list variant was built on value and utility as a basis but I would categorize it as a land destruction matters deck. You may not make many friends with your opponents as land destruction is seen quite negatively within casual groups but the strength of these board wipes are huge. In addition we have a few combos and synergies to go with this theme which mainly end up being much faster or complete recovery after a board wipe or just win the game. I'll let you piece some of this together and feel free to let me know what you think.
Athreos, Shroud-Veiled
On the other end of this pantheons spectrum we have Athreos, the Shroud-Veiled God of Passage and the only returning multi-coloured God of Theros. In contrast to Klothys who is a low cost engine, Athreos is definitely more of a mid to late game recursion Commander with a variety of possibilities thanks to his end step trigger. The coin counters do an incredible thing by bringing back creatures not only those who die but those sent to exile. It is notable that this does not work with blink effects such as Eldrazi Displacer or Restoration Angel but it does work with delayed blink and return effects such as Flickerwisp and Kaya, Ghost Assassin.
Recursion from exile like this is a rarity and even with the timing constraints are exceedingly strong due to being able to target any creature not just your own. While taking resources from others is well and good I don't depend on politics or opponents so loading up the deck with plenty of targets will have your creatures coming in repeatedly and threateningly, I love finding places for Ashen Rider to fit in. The most satisfying part to me is getting around the detrimental exile effects that cards like Whip of Erebos and Coffin Queen create by replacing their exile with Athreos' coin counter exile, turning temporary recursion into permanent recursion. Some of the decks built with God Commanders work on their own, others tend to be something you build around, Athreos is a bit of both but it's great if you can keep him around. Anyways take a look at his toolbox, there were so many options for this one of course and I'm curious if there are any staples you feel should be in here.
I hope you've enjoyed the completion of our Theros: Beyond Death pantheon of decks. Which deck do you think is better? Better yet which of the all the Theros God Commanders is the best? Perhaps Kerenos? Maybe Xenagos? I know some who would argue until the end that it's Kruphix. I'm looking forward to sharing more Commander deck techs all around.
