In one of my recent articles, I mentioned that Ephara, God of the Polis is one of my favourite underrated commanders. So I decided I would whip up a deck list to share with you guys this week.
The deck is pretty straightforward but a lot of fun. With a build that's chock full of enter-the-battlefield effects, board state buffs, and just general value, this deck can pack a punch in more casual playgroups (where it's meant to be played).
How Does it Work?
Basically, you start the early game either dropping mana rocks like Sol Ring and Fellwar Stone but leaving mana open for useful Flash creatures if you have any available. Once Ephara hits the battlefield, just keep slamming creatures to keep filling your hand and board.
Notable Interactions
Deadeye Navigator is as dirty in this deck as in any other. On its own you can blink any random creature to ensure you draw a card on each turn, but if you pair it with Palinchron and either Angel of Serenity or Venser, Shaper Savant it can get a lot stupider. Venser can be used to bounce every permanent on the board that you don't control, Angel of Serenity can be used to exile all opponents' creatures permanently. To do this, you simply have the Angel enter the battlefield, declare your targets, then blink it in response. The "leaves the battlefield" trigger will go on the stack, but since no creatures are exiled yet, nothing will happen. Then you repeat this process any number of times, and when you stop each targeted creature will be put into exile with no way of coming back.
Other ways to keep the engine going are Restoration Angel, Cloud Cover and Whitemane Lion.
Lastly, although the deck runs a few noncreature spells, it is mostly reliant on creatures. So Vryn Wingmare and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben are included to slow down opponents who may get in your way with board wipes or combos.
