Daily Dose of Conspiracy: Take the Crown – New Planeswalkers

DDCON4

Welcome to Conspiracy week on the Daily Dose! I’ve been previewing some of the new cards, mechanics, and design of the new Conspiracy: Take the Crown set. When Magic decides to make supplementary products outside of the four major set releases, it allows them to visit settings, design space, and characters that wouldn’t normally be seen. Thanks to the storyline in Conspiracy: Take the Crown we are able to see two Planeswalkers emerge, one new, and one we’ve seen before. First I’m going to take a look at the newest Planeswalker on the block. Let’s take a look at Kaya, Ghost Assassin!

kaya, ghost assassin

At first look, this card reminds me a lot of Venser, the Sojourner. Kaya, Ghost Assassin allows you to blink any creature to remove it from combat before you attack. Since it has no plus abilities, it’s added the nice ability to blink itself to allow it to reset her loyalty counters back to five for your next turn. Whether you use the last two abilities will be dependant on how much protection you have to make sure Kaya, Ghost Assassin stays on the battlefield. I would more likely to use her -2 ability for the sheer card advantage over the life drain, but this will be dependant on the state of the battlefield during your turn. I think Kaya, Ghost Assassin is a well designed Planeswalker which will see a lot of play next weekend. It can give either combat advantage, life total advantage, or card advantage. The versatility speaks for itself.

Another product which introduced us too new Planeswalkers were the Commander 2014 decks. For the first time, they allowed certain Planeswalkers to also be used as your commander. The red deck introduced us to Daretti, who just loved to play with artifacts. Daretti is back in Conspiracy: Take the Crown. Here is Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast.

daretti, ingenious iconoclast

To start off you are going to be getting a 1/1 Construct artifact creature each turn, that will be able to protect Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast if needed. Where this little 1/1 becomes more powerful is when you combine it with Daretti’s second ability.

This will allow you to kill off a creature every second turn. It works even better if you’ve drafted other artifacts that are already on the battlefield. If you do happen to get to Daretti’s ultimate, it can be quite powerful. If you are able to copy a large artifact creature it will put you in great position to win the game. As of right now, there is only one artifact previewed for Conspiracy: Take the Crown, which is Spy Kit, so only time will tell if there are enough artifacts that can be drafted to take advantage of Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast.

It’s time to look at the reprint of the day, and today we are given a card that hasn’t seen regular print since Unlimited, and a premium foil reprint in From the Vault: Exiled. Welcome back, Berserk!

berserk

Berserk is one of the all-time finishing cards, allowing you to double your creatures power, while providing trample to bust through any attackers your opponent might put in the way. This is one of the greatest combat tricks ever printed and I’m sure it will be the last card played in many matches during Conspiracy drafts.

Thanks again for joining me for Conspiracy week here on the Daily Dose. I’m looking forward to seeing what the rest of the Conspiracy set turns out to be like and I’ll be back next week to go over the cards that you want to be looking for when it comes to drafting this new set. See you then!
