Cosi, The Great Trickster

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you all enjoyed playing Standard, Modern and/or Limited events with Oath of the Gatewatch cards for the first time this weekend! It's something I'm looking forward to doing tomorrow! When I last discussed this set from an EDH standpoint I found it quite under-whelming, but the spoiler had not yet completed. Now? I still find it rather disappointing, but I will admit it's given us a few interesting generals to play with in the best of all formats - EDH!

Today, we are going to talk about one of those Commanders, Kozilek, The Great Distortion.

What's With Those Diamonds?

If you're someone who doesn't keep up with new sets, you may be confused by the two symbols after the eight in Kozilek's mana cost. These are a new symbol that reflect a necessity to use colourless mana to cast our inter-dimensional god. Essentially, cards that would tap for FePyJva now tap for Colorless-symbol, cards like Sol Ring tap for Colorless-symbolColorless-symbol. I'm not going to go too much further into the mechanics of colourless, but if you want to learn how it works, check out this great article by one of my fellow contributors, Brendan Butt.

What's The Game Plan?

You'd probably expect that a deck with no access to the colour pie is fairly straightforward in terms of battle strategy. You're not wrong. Kozilek's goal is basically to ramp like mad using notorious colourless sources such as the mentioned Sol Ring, as well as Mana Vault, Metalworker, Mana Crypt, and others. However, with the new basic land Wastes and actual colourless spells such as Warping Wail. Besides these specifics, the deck is essentially what's called "good stuff."
