Welcome all to the Daily Dose of Core Set 2020 where today I’m going to be talking to you about some sweet new white cards. Today I’ve got an array of White cards for you to splash in all your wonderful new decks. I’ll be talking about an Angel that could be cast much earlier than expected. I don’t want to forget to talk about a neat creature that is also a removal spell. I’ll also be talking about the removal spell that white has been asking for to truly clear off the battlefield. It’s time to see what Core Set 2020 is bringing to the table for White decks in the coming months.
I want to start off by talking about a creature that keeps adding value, the longer it stays on the battlefield. Here is Hanged Executioner.
This card screams value at every step. To start off you get two 1/1 Flying creatures for three mana. This can go a long way in helping you with the flying matters decks that will happen in Core Set 2020 Limited as well as just making it harder for your opponent to deal with two creatures instead of one. The greatest value of Hanged Executioner will come most likely on a future turn when you exchange this 1/1 Flying creature to exile any other creature on the battlefield. You basically get some free flying creatures with a removal spell all built in one. True, it will cost you seven mana over a few turns, but you can’t really ask for more out of a creature.
Next, is a removal spell that Control players will love having in their decks. Here is the return of Planar Cleansing.
Planar Cleansing used to be a staple in Core Sets, showing up in 3 different sets in a span of 5 years. The reason they kept printing it and why they printed it again, is that the Standard metagame needs a clear all for everything out there. Planar Cleansing deals with a creature heavy deck as well as clearing all the enchantments of a Simic Nexus deck. Planar Cleansing will take care of all those pesky planeswalkers in Esper or Jeskai Planeswalker decks. Planar Cleansing can even deal with both, which you will see in decks like Esper Hero. Six mana is a heavy cost to pay, but with less counterspells being played in the main deck, you can almost guarantee on turn six, that you will be able to clear off the battlefield.
Finally, I want to talk about one of the sweetest creatures in the set. Here is Sephara, Sky’s Blade.
This is quite the amazing design for a creature. To start off you get amazing base stats of a 7/7 Flying, Lifelink creature for only seven mana. Even without its cost reduction to cast it, I still wouldn’t mind paying full boat to get this on the battlefield. The question you must ask is, how easy is it to get four flying creatures onto the battlefield in Core Set 2020? For White, there are 7 other flying creatures in the set, with 1 of them having a casting cost of one and 2 of them having casting cost of three. All the others have a casting cost of four or more. This means it will be hard to get 4 flying creatures out there quickly to cast this before turn five or six. If you add in blue flying creatures though it gets more interesting. For blue and or multicolour including blue, there are 11 more Flying creatures to choose from including 6 of them with casting cost three or less, and 3 with casting cost two or less. This makes it more likely to be able to cast Sephara, Sky’s Blade for its alternate cost. Once you have all those flying creatures on the battlefield, they get the bonus of becoming indestructible thanks to Sephara, Sky’s Blade’s last ability.
Looks like there will be some happy Magic players thanks to these 3 new cards. The card I am most interested in seeing if it has an impact is Hanged Executioner. Thanks again for reading the Daily Dose of Core Set 2020. Join me again tomorrow as I finish off the week talking about some nice new Artifacts from Core Set 2020.
